At Wild Clouds, we're always trying to make more thoughtful choices, not just in the fabrics we use, but in what happens during the making process too.
For Zero Waste Week, we wanted to take you behind the scenes and be honest with you about what actually happens to our fabric offcuts and pattern waste — including the parts we haven't figured out yet.
Why Do We Have Offcuts?
When a garment is cut from fabric, some small pieces are naturally left behind. Even with careful pattern placement, it's impossible to use every last inch.
For us, the question isn't simply "What can we make?" but "How can we waste less?"
We look closely at our cutting and production processes to make the most of the fabric we source.

Thoughtful Pattern Cutting
Our approach starts with pattern cutting.
By considering how patterns are positioned on the fabric before we cut, we can minimise unnecessary waste while still creating the relaxed silhouettes and shapes Wild Clouds is known for.
We also don't match the print design to each individual pattern piece. Skipping that means we're not forcing pieces to line up with a print, so we have more flexibility to nest them efficiently on the fabric — which leaves less behind.
This is where we've made the most progress — and honestly, where most of our offcut reduction actually happens.
The Honest Bit: What Happens to the Leftover Pieces
Here's where we want to be straight with you.
We've experimented with turning some of our offcuts into small accessories before — eye masks, headbands, wristbands — made from genuine leftover fabric. If you've bought one, you'll know exactly where the fabric came from.
But most of these haven't found the right audience, and right now we don't have a reliable system for reusing every offcut we produce. It's something we want to get better at, not something we've already solved.

What Happens to the Offcuts We Don't Reuse?
Not every offcut becomes something new yet, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.
What we can tell you: any fabric we don't use doesn't go to landfill. It's sent for textile recycling instead.
It's not a perfect solution, but it means nothing we cut is simply thrown away.
A More Thoughtful Approach to Packaging
Our commitment to reducing waste doesn't stop at the sewing room.
We're also working towards plastic-free packaging, because sustainability should be considered throughout the journey of a garment — from the materials we choose to how your order arrives at your door.
We don't use polybags for our clothes. From the warehouse to your door, garments are held together with a simple cardboard belly band instead.
It's all about looking at the bigger picture and finding better ways to do things.
There Is No Perfect Zero-Waste Wardrobe
We don't claim to have all the answers.
Creating clothing will always require resources, energy, materials, and people. But we believe that being thoughtful about what we use — and honest about what we waste — is an important place to start.
For us, sustainability isn't about perfection.
It's about making better choices, asking better questions, and continually finding ways to improve.

We don't have this all figured out, and we're not going to pretend we do. Thoughtful pattern cutting is working. Reusing every offcut isn't — yet.
